Actors spend real money on this career. Headshots every couple of years — several hundred dollars, sometimes more. Classes. Coaching. Subscriptions to casting sites and services. The list goes on...

I'm not going to tell you any of that is a waste. Headshots especially. They're mandatory and they've gotta be good. 📸

But here's the thing about non-negotiables: everyone has them. Every actor in your bracket has headshots. So whatever a headshot does, it's doing it for everyone and separates you from no one, because everybody in the running has them. Maybe some are better than others, but having headshots isn't like having a unicorn. 🦄

And there's one thing a photograph structurally cannot do, no matter how good it is.

It can't show anybody that you can act. 🎬

That takes footage. A body of work. Something moving, where you're doing the thing you actually do – ACT.

And look — headshots being non-negotiable is one thing. The every-two-years part is a habit, not a law. Nobody's face changes that much in twenty-four months.

So here's what I actually think, take it or leave it: one of those cycles, skip the shoot. Take that money and invest it in your demo reel. I know which of the two I'd rather be handing people. 🎞️

Most actors have some footage. Fewer have built theirs on purpose. Mostly it just collects — a short a friend was shooting, a selftape of a scene from a class, a clip from a job you booked three years ago that felt like it came out of nowhere.

It looks like a pile of unrelated things. It isn't. You booked every one of those for a reason, and it's usually the same reason every time. The pattern was always there — it's just close to impossible to see from inside it. 🧬

Which is why building it deliberately is one of the few moves in this business that isn't crowded. Everyone gets the photos. Not everyone invests in the strategic, well-conceived evidence.
