Confession from somebody who teaches acting for a living: more class isn't always the answer. 🙊

I believe in class. I teach class! It makes you a better actor, and you should never stop getting better.

But it's worth being honest about what class is built to do. It tunes the instrument. It doesn't pick the song. 🎻

So if you've spent years getting better and your auditions look pretty much the way they did a few years ago, that's not a sign you need another class. It's a sign you've been working hard on a different problem than the one that's actually in your way.

I know because I did it. I had the training. My work was good. And I carried the wrong tape around town for literal years. No scene study class was ever going to catch that, bc nobody in class was looking at my tape. 📼

That's a coherence problem: the headshot says one thing, the reel says another, the scenes you pick say a third. Great craft doesn't fix it. Great craft pointed at the wrong target just misses more beautifully. 🎯

And here's the other thing class never does: hand you homework like this. Nobody in scene study gives you two weeks to watch everything the actors you're adjacent to have ever done, then read their scripts. (The scripts are free online. The time is the expensive part.) ⏳
